How to install EVSense: plug in, no wire cutting

You can install EVSense yourself with no wire cutting: plug the box into the USB port your car uses for CarPlay, plug a Vgate OBD adapter into the OBD-II port if it's an EV, then follow the setup wizard on the car screen.

Before you start

What do you need to install EVSense?

Just a few things — no mechanic's tools needed.

7 steps

Install EVSense step by step

Park somewhere safe before you start, and never set it up while driving.

  1. Check that your car is on the tested list

Look up your car in the tested-cars table and make sure the head unit supports Apple CarPlay. If your car isn't listed, contact us first.

  2. Find the USB port used for CarPlay

Use the USB port your head unit uses for Apple CarPlay. If the car has several, check the car's manual for the CarPlay one.

  3. Plug in the EVSense box

Plug the EVSense box into that USB port. No wires to cut or splice.

  4. Plug the Vgate OBD adapter into the OBD-II portEVs only

For EV data, plug the Vgate into the car's OBD-II port. It is usually under the dashboard on the driver's side — check the car's manual for the exact spot. Skip this step on non-EV cars.

  5. Turn the car on and wait for the EVSense screen

The first start can take about a minute before the screen appears through CarPlay, and on some cars you need to tap the CarPlay icon on the screen.

  6. Follow the first-time setup wizard

An on-screen wizard takes you through setup one step at a time, using the car's touchscreen.

    1. Language: pick the on-screen language.
    2. Wi-Fi: set up Wi-Fi with help from your phone, as the screen shows.
    3. My car: choose your car model.
    4. Pair Vgate: pair the OBD adapter over Bluetooth (EVs only).
    5. Report email: add up to 3 addresses on screen, or scan a QR code and type them on your phone. You can skip this for now.
    6. PDPA consent: read and agree to how data is handled.

What data we keep and why

  7. Confirm your report emailIf you added an email

Open the email from [email protected] and press the confirm button within 7 days — reports only start after that. Can't find it? Check your spam folder.

No wire cutting

EVSense only uses the existing USB port, plus the OBD-II port for EV data. It only reads data, never controls the car, and unplugs whenever you like.

Troubleshooting

Installed, but something isn't showing?

The EVSense screen doesn't appear

Give it about a minute the first time, then try tapping the CarPlay icon. Make sure you used the CarPlay USB port, not a charge-only port.

No EV data

Check that the Vgate is firmly in the OBD-II port and paired in Settings, and that your car is an EV tested for EV data.

The connection drops now and then

Some cars marked "Partial" still do this and we are working on it — see your car's note in the tested-cars table.

No report emails

Make sure you pressed the confirm button in the email (the link works for 7 days), check spam, and add [email protected] to your contacts. Email reports are for members and during the trial.
